Pancreas Center of First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, also known as JSPH (Jiangsu Province Hospital) Pancreas Center originated in 1986 as the first professional group of pancreatic surgery in China. The Pancreas Center and the Pancreas Institute were established on September 1 of 2014 and in December of 2014 respectively. It is the National Key Clinical Specialist Construction Unit, key discipline of Jiangsu provincial government "Tenth five-year” and “Eleventh Five-Year” Project, Jiangsu province key clinical department and one of the ten clinical medical centers of Jiangsu Province Xingwei Project. It is the first pancreas center/institute that focused on disease and have multidisciplinary teams including pancreatic surgery, endoscopy, digestive medicine, oncology, radiology, pathology and other expert team. The Center has 59 beds including pancreatic ICU, and undertakes the diagnosis and treatment of all pancreatic cancer and acute/chronic pancreatitis of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Each year, thousands of acute/chronic pancreatitis patients are admitted to our center, and nearly 1,500 pancreas-related endoscopic procedures are conducted. Meanwhile, more than 700 pancreatic surgeries are performed in our center. The center has its own biobank, laboratory for basic science, database, medical transformation center and other research departments. The Center and the University of Heidelberg, Germany, the European Pancreas Center, Liverpool British National Cancer Institute and other famous pancreas centers maintained a long-term deep cooperation in recent years. It is developing rapidly with high international academic impact.
Dr. Yi Miao
Professor Miao Yi is a well-known expert in pancreatic surgery, graduated from the University of Leuven, Belgium (KU Leuven) where he received a doctoral degree. He serves as deputy director of the pancreatic surgery group of the Chinese Medical Association, director of Jiangsu Association of Panceatology , FACS (Fellow of American college of surgeons) , FRCS (Fellow of Royal college of surgeons) and FICS (Honorary Fellow of International College of Surgeons ). Professor Miao Yi was invited to serve as a member of ISGPS (International Pancreatic Surgery Research Group) in 2016 and participated in the preparation of the ISGPS Statement of Pancreatic anastomosis after pancreatoduodenectomy and participated in the drafting of clinical guidelines for Chronic Pancreatitis by four International Pancreatic Society(IAP/APA/JPA/EPC).
The center has a number of unique techniques which have international influence including pancreatic tumor biopsy through duodenal, modified one-layer duct-to-mucosa pancreaticojejunostomy, artery-approach distal pancreatectomy, middle segment preserved subtotal pancreatectomy, middle segment pancreatectomy, ERAS（Enhanced recovery after surgery）, etc. and the development of Nanjing Standard for artery invasion of pancreatic cancer.
The center has the largest biobank of pancreatic diseases in East Asia, which has preserved more than 30,000 copies of biological samples for pancreatic disease. Foreign experts were hired as technical advisers and the quality management is strict. In 2015, the center won the financial support of a funding project called " Jiangsu Province biological resources for major diseases " with total funding of 35 million. In recent years, the center has won one sub-project of the "Eleventh Five-Year" National Science and Technology Support Program (16 hospitals nationwide), one funding of the Ministry of Health Industry fund (10 hospitals nationwide), becoming one of the first-class pancreatic surgery centers. The center has also won 19 items of the National Natural Science Fund, more than 20 items of provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects. The research funding adds up to 38 million yuan. More than 80 SCI articles were published with total citation index of nearly 2,000 times. The center has won the Second Prize of Jiangsu Provincial Government Science and Technology Progress, the Second Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, the third prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award and the first prize of Jiangsu Province Medical Science and Technology Award. Besides, the center possesses one US patent and 18 Chinese patents.
The Center also has a surgical skills training center accredited by the Royal College of Surgery in England. The 2015 pancreatic surgery course is accredited by the Royal College of Surgery (RCS).
