Intensive Care Unit Center
Jiangsu Province Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was established in August 1983 and formally put into use on September 28, 1984. Equipped with six beds, the department was one of the earliest ICU in China. In 1985 February, Dean Guifang Lin was the first concurrent director of the section. Then, the same year in May, Yunqing Xi was appointed as deputy director. Professor Yitang Wang and director Dexin Li were invited as advisers. Later, Xin Rong Xu served as director in 1990. May 2003, the ICU was relocated to the east of the 4th floor of the new surgical building with 12 beds. In 2006, Quan Cao served as the director of the department and concurrent director of the department of critical care in 2014. After nearly 10 years of development, in 2013, DR. Quan Cao set up 8 beds in the ICU of Chengbei branch institute and enlarged the social influence of department. Now, there are 16 doctors, including 3 chief physicians ,4 associate chief physicians, 9 attending physicians and nearly 70 nurses.

DR.Quan Cao graduated from Tongji Medical University School of Medicine in 1986, and assigned to the Jiangsu Provincial Hospital intensive care unit. Then he was promoted to physician in 1993 and works in Jiangsu Provincial Hospital intensive care unit to date. He successively completed masters and doctoral degree in Department of Surgery of Nanjing Medical University and engaged in "shock and recovery" field.

Promoted to associate professor, master tutor in 2001.
Promoted to chief physician, named as the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (Jiangsu Provincial Hospital) ICU director In 2006.
2007, being a member of Jiangsu Province Emergency Medicine Branch and went to study in the ICU of Washington University Medical Center for 3 months.
2009, the vice chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Critical Care Medicine.

Up to now , he has published more than 30 articles , including SCI and China Magazine series, and 8 books or monographs.
Since establishment, the number of critically ill patients has risen year by year, and many domestic and foreign patients with dying diseases have been successfully rescued. The patients covered a wide range of diseases including liver transplantation, major surgery or severe complications, severe pregnancy maternal, cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest, severe multiple trauma, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD), shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and others.
Department is responsible for teaching and internship of Nanjing Medical University in different majors, including Department of Surgery, Critical care, Recovery, Mechanical Ventilation and Critical monitoring. In the past 10 years, our team sponsored two national-level classes, including “Ventilator in Clinical Applications" and "New Progress Seminar on the Treatment of Critical Illnesses" annually. As a training base for critical care nurses in Jiangsu Province, we have continuously trained 200 critically ill specialist nurses in 9 sessions. The department trains 15 advanced doctors every year. Since the establishment, teaching and research section of ICU have fostered 10 master degree candidates and 3 doctoral candidates. For the past few years, director Quan Cao, director Xinrong Xu and head nurse Yanbo Song and Huayu Chen went to the United States, Japan, Australia, Singapore and other countries for study, applying foreign advanced knowledge, technologies and concepts to the treatment and care of critically ill patients in the center.
ICU mainly focuses on the prevention and treatment of septic shock and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Having a lot of exploration and technological innovation in clinic, the department participated in a number of domestic and international multi-center researches. The team has published 10 papers per year, 2-3 SCI papers included, undertook national, provincial and municipal scientific research tasks, written several monographs and won the second prize of Chinese Medical Progress Award.
