Overview

The Rheumatology Department of The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University was set up in 1992. It is one of the earliest founded specialized department in Jiangsu Province. The department currently employs 14 doctors with 50 beds. This department is ranked top 20 in the nation by Fudan University Best Hospital Ranking Report. Our mission is to promote prevention, cure, and relief of suffering caused by rheumatic disease through the education of the next generation of rheumatologists and investigators; by developing new knowledge through innovative, multi-disciplinary research; and by providing patient-centered, integrated clinical care.

In parallel with our clinical activities, we have well-developed basic science research programs where our primary focus is on understanding the pathogenesis on rheumatoid arthritis, sjogren syndrome and connective tissue related pulmonary hypertension.

As the affiliated hospital of Nanjing Medical University, our department has established top-notch training programs in clinical and basic study in rheumatic and immunologic diseases for medical and graduate students and residents.


Department Director 

Dr. Miaojia Zhang

Dr. Zhang received the bachelor’s degree in 1982, and the D.S. degree from Nanjing Medical University in 2004. She is currently the Ph.D. supervisor, a permanent member of a council of Rheumatology of Chinese Medical Association and Chinese Medical Doctor Association; chairman of a council of Rheumatology of Jiangsu Medical Association, Jiangsu Medical Doctor Association and Jiangsu Association of the Integration of Traditional and Western Medicine.

Major Research Interests: Prof. Zhang’s major research interests is the mechanism of adiponectin on bone erosion in rheumatoid arthritis. She has edited 15 textbooks, published more than 70 SCI and core journal papers. She currently has two projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one project supported from National Science and Technology Major Project. She also took charge of one special project of clinical medicine from Jiangsu Province. 

Awards: Prof. Zhang received one third prize of Jiangsu Provincial Medical Science and Technology Award. She also achieved one second prize of new technology introduction award in Jiangsu Provincial Commission of Health and Family Planning.


The department is the key clinical department of Jiangsu Province and national clinical drug experimental base for rheumatology and immunology. We provide comprehensive care for patients with rheumatic and immunologic diseases, with state-of-the-art imaging, diagnostics, and therapeutics, and collaborative teams of specialists. It is featured by The Demonstration Center for Standardized diagnosis and treatment of Rheumatic Pulmonary Hypertension. Diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis serves as another prominent characteristic. The department also establishes rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis special disease clinic, independent joint ultrasound examination, specialized laboratory, accompanied by chronic disease management center for long term follow-up of rheumatoid arthritis and other patients.
