Overview

The Department of Thoracic Surgery of the Jiangsu Province Hospital (First Affiliated Hospital to Nanjing Medical University) was founded in 1956, and after several generations of unremitting efforts, has become a first-class modernized department with great subject scale, specialized equipment and advanced technologies.

It is the earliest master's station designated by the Ministry of Education, and is now the host department to doctorates and post-docs, the “Jiangsu 135 key discipline development departments,” the key specialist discipline of Jiangsu Province. The department has 3 wards, including 1 thoracic surgery area, 2 wards and an intensive care unit (ICU), a total of 69 beds.

The staff consists of 1 professor, 3 associate professors, 5 chief physicians, 9 deputy chief physicians, 2 resident doctors. Those experienced experts are respectively the chief committee member and deputy chief committee member of medical institutes at all levels, vice chairman and other important academic positions. In addition, the nursing staff consists of 46 people, including 4 deputy director nurses, 16 superviser nurses, 30 people with college degrees.

The department is at a leading position in the field of minimally invasive thoracic surgery, including lobectomy, precision segmentectomy, subsegmentectomy and esophagectomy, standardized treatment of thoracic tumor , and painless and accelerated rehabilitation of chest surgery.

Department Director

Dr. Chen Liang, Director of Department of Thoracic Surgery, Jiangsu Province Hospital

Chief Member of Jiangsu Provincial Medical Association, Thoracic Branch

Member of the Fourth Term of the Chinese Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Thoracoscopic Group

Thoracic Group Leader of Jiangsu Provincial Association of Thoracic Surgery.

After his graduation from Nanjing Medical University in 1986, Dr. Chen Liang has worked in the Department of Thoracic Surgery in Jiangsu Province Hospital until now, specializing in the research of thoracic diseases, and has worked on more than 10,000 cases. In recent years, he is devoted to the surgical treatment of early-stage lung cancer. He has completed 500 thoracoscopic anatomical segmentectomy, 140 lung subsegmentectomy and the first two cases of sub-subsegmentectomy in the world. He also succeeded the world's first mixed reality (MR) technology assisted pulmonary segmentectomy in 2017.

Dr. Chen Liang first put forward nationally and globally the idea of " accurate segmentectomy under the guidance of three-dimensional CT bronchography and angiography  (3D-CTBA),” and has since made many reports and demonstrations in international and domestic thoracic conferences, promoting the use of accurate segmentectomy. His team self-developed the first software system, DeepInsight, in China for bronchial and vascular reconstruction in cooperation with Neusoft Group Ltd.

Dr. Chen organized the compilation of the first book "The Atlas of Thoracoscopic Anatomical Pulmonary Segmentectomy. " He has chaired or participated in more than 10 national, provincial and ministerial level researchs, published more than 20 papers in domestic and international journals, won more than 10 scientific and technological achievements awards and holds 5 patents. He’s currently in charge of two on-going projects:

(1) Long-chain non-coding RNA Linc-WIF1-1 in lung cancer invasion and metastasis of the regulatory mechanism. Sponsored by Jiangsu Provincial Natural Science Foundation of China (BK20151584,2015-2018);

(2) 3D-CTA Imaging and Printing Techniques for Precision Navigation of Thoracoscopic Laparoscopic Resection. Sponsored by The Six Talent Peaks in Jiangsu Province (WSW-028, 2015-2020).

(1) Accurate thoracoscopic pulmonary segmentectomy and subsegmentectomy

The department staff developed the groundbreaking application of 3D-CTBA imaging technology and 3D printing technology to guide anatomical segmentectomy and subsegmentectomy for the diagnosis and treatment of suspicious and multiple pulmonary nodules. Five hundred cases of anatomical segmentectomies and 140 cases of subsegmentectomies were completed. The department also completed the world's first two cases of thoracoscopic sub-subsegmentectomy.

(2) Minimally invasive treatment of pulmonary and mediastinal diseases

The department had a headstart in China to carry out and thoracoscopic lobectomy and systemic lymph node dissection for the treatment of early lung cancer, the implementation of thoracoscopic lung sleeve resection, double lobectomy, pneumonectomy, thoracoscopic thymoma resection, and the thymectomy for the treatment of myasthenia gravis.

(3) Minimally invasive and standardized treatment of esophageal cancer

The Department of Thoracic Surgery was among the first to be granted as the "esophageal cancer treatment center" by the National Association of Cancer Esophageal Branch, with in-depth research in esophageal cancer treatment. We are started the study of thoracotomy combined with esophageal cancer radical surgery (McKeown and Ivor Lewis surgery) promptly, and improved the Ivor Lewis operation, winning the First Prize in Jiangsu Provincial Health Department Introduction of New Technology Award. We are also among the advanced level in esophageal cancer selective three-field lymph node dissection surgery, standard two-field lymph node dissection.

(4) The establishment of Thoracic painless ward and Accelerated Rehabilitation Wards

The Department of Thoracic Surgery is also quite early in the establishment of Thoracic painless ward and Accelerated Rehabilitation Wards, and the first to adopt "full staff, full journey, full aspect service" concept, in order to reduce the postoperative complications, promote postoperative recovery, shorten hospitalization and improve patient satisfaction. The department is in cooperation with Huaxi Hospital, Qilu Hospital and other hospitals in thoracic surgery and accelerated rehabilitation.

Since 2015, the Department of Thoracic Surgery have sent outstanding personnel to the United States, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Taiwan for study, visit and exchange. We also received more than 30 experts from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and other countries and regions to visit, exchange and give lectures. In addition, our department regularly accepts experts in thoracic surgery from Taiwan's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Veterans General Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Taiwan University to learn about segmentectomy. At present, we have given two sessions of advanced thoracostomy COE training course, and four sessions of special lectures.

Dr. Director Chen Liang has perfomed live demonstration of segmentectomy or subsegmentectomy many times in Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Ruijin Hospital, Zhejiang University First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital and other hospitals. In 2017, Dr. Chen accepted the invitation of Akinori Iwasaki, the president of the Japanese Society of Thoracic Surgeons, to participate in the 2017 Japan Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting (34th.
