Department of Cardiovascular Surgery of Jiangsu Province Hospital was founded in 1956. It was originally developed from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. After decades of effort, it is now the key discipline of 135 Project and the key clinical department in Jiangsu Province and the professional quality control center for cardiothoracic surgery in Jiangsu Province.
The department currently employs 95 professionals, among which 15 have senior professional titles, 4 are full professors, 9 are associate professors, 5 are doctoral supervisors and 8 are master tutors.

Dr. Shao has been working in Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery for nearly 30 years, involving clinical work, scientific research, and teaching. His expertise includes surgical treatment for heart valve disease, atrial fibrillation combined with heart valve disease, adult congenital heart disease, and type I aortic dissecting aneurysm. He has successfully conducted heart transplantation and lung transplantation for terminal stage cardiopulmonary diseases as well as minimally invasive surgical treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation. The long-term outcomes are excellent.
Dr Shao has published 13 SCI papers, 8 core periodical papers, and 2 books (as co-author) for the last 5 years. He has achieved 5 provincial scientific research grants, 2 new technology awards from the Department of Health of Jiangsu province and gained a title of Top Talent of Public Health in Jiangsu Province.

The department is currently composed of group of heart valve disease, aortic disease group, coronary artery disease group, adult congenital heart disease group, pediatric congenital heart disease group, minimally invasive treatment group, cardiopulmonary bypass group.
The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery uses the best existing technology for cardiac surgeons. It has two ICU, bronchoscopy room and a hybrid operating room (level 100 operating room). The department currently has 120 beds, including 19 beds for Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery has pioneered numerous procedures, including minimally invasive valve replacements and an improved way of repairing aortic aneurysms. As a teaching institution focused on research, surgeons are committed to offering the newest advances to the patients they serve. The department undertakes a large number of teaching and research tasks. It has trained more than 100 doctoral and master's degree students of medicine. Currently it has 3 national natural science foundation projects, as well as a number of provincial and ministerial level research projects. It has published more than 200 papers, including 76 SCI papers and the highest impact factor is 15.2. It has achieved 1 Chinese Science and Technology Award, 2 First Prizes of Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 First Prizes of New Technology Introduced by Provincial Health Department with 2 second prize. It owns 8 national patents and 23 applied patents.
