Department of Ophthalmology of Jiangsu Province Hospital is one of the fields to award master’s and doctorate degrees in ophthalmology, the key discipline of "the twelfth five-year" Science and Education and Health Project in Jiangsu province, the clinical key specialty of Jiangsu Province Health Department, the key discipline of Nanjing Medical University, the Ophthalmology Medical Quality Control Center of Jiangsu Province, and the Eye Bank of Jiangsu Province. The department also serves as Jiangsu Province Plastic Surgery (ophthalmology) Attending Physician Training Base, the Leader Unit of Blindness Prevention in Jiangsu Province, and the National Drug Clinical Trial Base.
There are 62 beds for in ward patients and 33 ophthalmologists in this department, and the number of annual operations exceeds 8,000. owning one member of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association standing committee, two members of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association youth committee, three committee members of Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, one medical key talents of Health department of Jiangsu province "science and education and health project", four training targets of "Six Talent Peak" in Jiangsu province, and two "333 high-level personnel training project" middle-aged and young science and technology leaders in Jiangsu Province.
In the past three years, our department has won two National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), nine general projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, one Outstanding Youth Fund and one Jiangsu Province "double plan" Jiangsu Province, obtaining a total of 18.5 million research funding. Three Chinese medicine science and technology prizes and a number of Jiangsu Province Health Department new technology introduction awards were granted to doctors of our department.

Dr. Liu is now the committee member of Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS), committee member of Vitreous Retinal Diseases Group of COS, chairman of Jiangsu Ophthalmological Society (8th), vice chairman of Vision Health Group of China International Exchange and Promotive Association for Medical and Health Care (CPAM), and the standing committee member of Chinese Ophthalmological Society of Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA), Ocular Micro vascular circulation Society of Chinese Micro vascular circulation Society, and Chinese Ophthalmological Society of Chinese Geriatrics Society (CGS). He has been committed to clinical and basic research in ophthalmology for 21 years and gains rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases. He is particularly good at surgical treatment of diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment. He is also one of the proceedings of phacoemulsification in Jiangsu province, and has extensive clinical experience in the treatment of various types of complicated cataract cases.
Dr. Liu has mainly focused his research on the prevalence, gene susceptibility, pathological mechanism, bio-marker identification, and Translational Medicine of retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR). He has published more than 50 papers in high impact factor ophthalmic journals such as Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Experiment Eye Research. His most recent work has been cited over five hundred during the past 5 years with an h-index of 13 and an i10-index of 17.
Since August 2014, our department has taken the lead in carrying out "daytime ward projects" in Jiangsu province. Cataracts have achieved daytime one-stop service, significantly reducing hospital stay and costs of cataracts and improving the turnover rate and bed usage rate of the ward.
As the provincial complicated retinal disease surgery center, over three thousand surgeries have been performed annually in recent years. As the leading unit of ophthalmic medical in Jiangsu Province, patients with ophthalmic intractable diseases from near provinces and even across the Country were transferred to our department. Wide praise and prominent social influence were achieved.
The department is equipped abundant and advanced exam machines such as fundus angiography (FFA + ICGA), visual field, regular and angio OCT, retinal tomography (HRT), multifocal visual electrophysiological examination, ultrasound biomicroscopy ophthalmology (UBM) and et al.

There is a tradition of our departments, which young staffs are sent abroad to study and communicate every year. Many staffs have the experience to learn abroad in the USA, Japan or German with the Scholarship of Nation or province. The international meetings, such as AAO and ARVO, attract more and more staff to attend. Meanwhile, our department keeps regular academic communication with international institution, for example, the Department of Human Genetics of UCLA, Department of Ophthalmology of University of Michigan, Department of Ophthalmology of Osaka University.
