The Department of Geriatric Nephrology of Jiangsu Province Hospital consists of outpatient, ward, and blood purification center. It was established in 2008 and has been developing rapidly in recent years, funded by the Priority Academic Program Development of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions. The department currently employs 37 professionals, among which, 60% doctors hold doctoral degrees while the other doctors hold master’s degrees. Among the nursing team, three nurses hold master’s degrees, one is a geriatric specialist nurse, and four are blood purification specialist nurses. There are 33 beds in the ward and 26 dialysis machines [including 6 continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) machines] in the blood purification center.
The department has been dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of elderly kidney diseases, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) in older patients, for nearly ten years. Two related researches were cited By the Clinical Practice Guideline focusing on the management of older patients with CKD stage 3b or higher (this is the first Guideline specific to the diagnosis and treatment of elderly CKD) drawn by European Renal Best Practice (ERBP). We have also been successfully providing maintenance hemodialysis for many elderly patients over 90 years old, and among which, two 100-year-old patients were treated by maintenance hemodialysis in our department for more than two years.
Dr. Zhao is the Chair of the Department of Geriatric Nephrology, Jiangsu Province Hospital, Nanjing, China. She is currently the Vice President of Geriatric Nephrology of Chinese Medical Association, the Vice President of Jiangsu Branch of Nephrology of the Chinese Medical Association, and a member of the standing committee of Jiangsu Province Committee for blood purification.

Dr. Zhao has nearly 30 years of experience in Nephrology, and especially specializes in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of elderly kidney disease. Dr. Zhao is an expert in hemodialysis, blood perfusion, plasma exchange, coupled plasma filtration adsorption(CPFA) and other blood purification techniques.
Time Visits: Monday morning and Wednesday morning
1) The Diagnosis And Treatment of Geriatric CKD:
Our department has set up a geriatric CKD clinic to accurately diagnose elderly CKD. We have established an integrated treatment scheme for CKD in the elderly according to the characteristics of coexistence of multiple chronic conditions and multiple drug use.
2) The Development of A Variety of Blood Purification Techniques:
Our department routinely carries out hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, hemoperfusion, single/double filtration plasmapheresis, CPFA, CRRT, especially CRRT without heparin or citrate anticoagulation, to provide effective treatment for the ESRD, AKI and MODS patients.
3) The Establishment of Dialysis Vascular Access in Elderly Patients:
We have been collaborating with vascular surgery and interventional radiology, applying artificial/auto vascular transplantation, vascular bypass, shrinkage, balloon dilatation and stent implantation, to solve the complicated vascular access problems in the elderly.
4) The Treatment of SHPT By The Total Parathyroidectomy With Forearm Autograft:
We have effectively treated the elderly uremic patients with severe secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) by the total parathyroidectomy with forearm autograft.
5) Other Specialized Technologies:
We perform routine examinations of urinary system and vascular access by B-ultrasound in our department ward. The renal biopsy, infusion port implantation and dialysis catheter implantation have also been performed under B-ultrasound guidance. In addition, we have undertaken peritoneal dialysis, colon dialysis and other specialized technologies related to kidney disease.
Medical Conditions Treated in Our Department Include:
Chronic kidney disease
Acute and chronic glomerulus nephritis
Ischemic renal disease
Urinary tract infection
Acute kidney injury
Since 2008, our department has been sending staff to communicate abroad through personal and group exchanges. Our doctors have visited Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Mayo clinic, the University of Florida and so on. We also invited internationally renowned experts to our academic exchange and actively participated in the annual conference of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the American Society of Gene Therapy (ASGT). We obtained New BioFlorida Postdoctoral Research Awarding from the Government of Florida.
