What is Geriatrics? —— Promoting Healthy Aging
Geriatrics, or geriatric medicine, aims to promote healthy ageing by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults. Geriatrics differs from standard adult medicine because it focuses on the unique needs of the elderly. The aged body is different physiologically from the younger adult body, and during ageing, the decline of various organ systems becomes manifest. Previous health issues and lifestyle choices produce a different constellation of diseases and symptoms in different people. The characteristics of geriatric diseases include atypical symptoms, insidious onset, multiple comorbidities, more complications, aggressive progression, poor prognosis, and more frequent adverse drug reactions.
With the concept of “Personalized Medicine and Holistic Management” during 30 years of development, Department of Geriatrics continuously explores and strengthens discipline construction in order to maximize the maintenance and recovery of functional status in elderly patients and improve their quality of life. Through the integration of resources and multidisciplinary collaboration, Department of Geriatrics has accumulated a good foundation and formed strong advantages and characteristics mainly in the following four aspects.
Diagnosis and Treatment Platform for Multiple Organ Dysfunction in the Elderly
