Time of Establishment, Number of Staffs and Beds, Academic Status and Influence in China and Abroad of the Department.
The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (“TCM”) was established in 1956 and has 11 permanent staff, of which, 9 have master or doctoral degrees. The Department is among the earliest of national bases for TCM clinical practice, teaching and research. In 1983, the Department was entitled to confer master’s degree in TCM internal medicine. In 2007, the Department is awarded the title of Exemplary TCM Department of Comprehensive National Hospitals by the Ministry of Health and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In the same year, the Department is approved as a base of National Clinical Trial Institutions for TCM Gastroentrology. Currently, the Department is an affiliation to the Institute of Integrative Medicine of the Nanjing Medical University.
Muxin, Wei, Doctor of Medicine, is the Executive Vice Director of the Institute of Integrative Medicine of the Nanjing Medical University and the Director of the Department of Integrative Medicine. Dr. Wei is the doctoral supervisor of Western Medicine on Gastroentrology and master supervisor of TCM Internal Medicine. He is also among the leaders of TCM research of Jiangsu Province and the Tenured Research Fellow of HiPep Institute. He has won a National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology (ranked 1st) and 3 Provincial Prizes for Science and Technology. He has published more than 200 academic papers (including 30 publications on prestigious foreign journals with highest SCI IF reaching 12.5) and edited 51 medical books. He is domestically leading in reversion of precancerous lesion of gastric cancer using TCM treatment.
The Department is experienced in treating difficult diseases with advantages in TCM and is advanced in treating precancerous lesion of gastric cancer using TCM treatment. Outpatient visits for senior experts of the Department are among the highest in the hospital with patients from other places, in particular overseas Chinese, exceeding 50% of the total number of patients. The Department is domestically leading in reversion of precancerous lesion of gastric cancer using TCM treatment both in terms of clinical and preclinical practice with more than 3500 successful examples. In addition, the Department also has technical advantages in TCM prevention and treatment of rheumatic immune disease, tumor, endocrine disease, infertility, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

The Department has engaged 3 foreign visiting professors, namely, Dr. Murakami Masataka of a National Institute for Physiological Science, Dr. Naruse Storu of Nagoya University, Japan and Dr. Kiyoshi Nokihara of HiPep Institute, Japan. The Department has maintained long-standing relationship with the abovementioned institutions both in terms of cooperation and personnel exchanges.
